Mount Ellinor
A steep, rugged climb to panoramic views across the Olympic Mountains, Lake Cushman, and Puget Sound.
Overview
Mount Ellinor via the Upper Trailhead is a short but strenuous climb in Olympic National Forest. The route ascends rapidly through forest and open mountainside to the 5,944-foot summit, where clear days reveal sweeping views of Lake Cushman, Puget Sound, Mount Washington, Mount Olympus, and the Olympic Mountains.
Route
From the upper trailhead, follow Mount Ellinor Trail #812 uphill through conifer forest until it joins the route from the lower trailhead. Beyond the junction, the grade steepens considerably as the trail climbs rocky slopes and a broad avalanche chute. The final approach crosses exposed scree and rock before reaching the summit area.
Conditions and safety
This is a hard, steep mountain hike despite its relatively short mileage. Snow can linger into summer, and the chute may require an ice axe, traction, and snow-travel skills when covered. Loose rock, exposure, rapidly changing weather, and mountain goats are additional concerns; hikers should keep their distance from wildlife and secure salty gear and food.
Planning notes
- Carry ample water because reliable sources are limited along the upper route.
- Start early to avoid heat, crowds, and deteriorating afternoon weather.
- A Northwest Forest Pass or equivalent federal recreation pass is typically required for trailhead parking.
- The rough forest-road approach may be unsuitable for low-clearance vehicles.
Best season: July–October
